“Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.” Genesis 25:34
“Esau despised his birthright.”
That which had been promised to him by God, he despised. To satisfy the here and now, for “his best life now” Esau gave up the very best God could offer for what? One could rightly fault Jacob for his deception and trickery, but had Esau cherished what God had promised, this interaction between brothers would never have happened.
But what about today - does this apply in our here and now?
What about those who walk among us, lost, separated from God. Rejecting God’ best [eternal life through His Son] they too have despised their birthright? How many tens of thousands have traded the very best God could ever offer mankind, turning their back on the promptings of the Holy Spirit, ignoring the teachings of The Word, walking away from God for bread and pottage of lentiles? Esau’ pottage of lentiles, his idol, comes in various ideas, shapes and forms in the twenty-first century. Climbing the corporate ladder, keeping up with the “Jones,” getting our kids into the most prestigious colleges and universities, living in the best house, driving the best car, going on expensive vacations. Time, there is no time for the things of God, just too busy to read His Word and much too tired to go to church on Sunday !
Could a “Christian” make the same choice as Esau?
Idols - anything that is adored or worshipped more than we adore or worship God.
Idols.!?!.
